Many believers today find themselves frustrated with a gnawing feeling of insignificance. Somehow in their thinking, they have viewed their vocation as a curse, having nothing to do with God’s purpose or spiritual realities. Some of this has to do with the usage of the word “ministry” in our modern church subculture. In this context, ministry is a word describing what I do within the context of an organization called the church. This ministry context usually involves being paid for working for the church. We view believers who do this as those who have “really arrived.”
This worldview couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, your vocation is your ministry: it is where God has called you to serve Him. Just think of the ramification of bringing your giftings, character, and supernatural insight into your workplace! What open doors to share your faith and even make the world a better place. Where would we all be without teachers who taught us to read, nurses that cared for our illnesses, construction workers who built us roads and houses, and corporations who provided us products and employment. All these things bring Glory to God.
Your work life is the place God wants to use your spiritual gifts to be a witness for Him and lead people to Christ. Just think of it; you spend half your life at work. These are people who can really witness Christianity in action and will trust you as you share what God can do for them through His son Jesus Christ.
